Dolores Claiborne Opera

I spotted this first at Liljas Library.

The Mercury News is reporting that Dolores Claiborne is being made into an opera.
And projecting further still into the next new season, mezzo-soprano Zajick, Gockley said, is tailor-made for "Dolores Claiborne," the role that earned Kathy Bates an Oscar nomination for the 1995 film made from the Stephen King thriller.
"It's a movie of heavy passions and tragedy and survival, and we thought it had operatic qualities," Gockley said "And doing it for the indomitable Dolora Zajick made sense."
The opera, composed by Tobias Picker and well-known librettist J.D. McClatchy, will open Sept. 15, 2013.
I have thought for years that if any King movie was due a remake, it was this one and Needful Things.  But opera?

  1. I know virtually nothing about opera, so if this were not a King-based project, it would be of almost no interest to me. I wish them well, though, and will be happy to buy a soundtrack if one is produced.

What do you dislike about the movie, David?

  2. My mom inflicted opera on me.

I do LOVE Phantom of the Opera. But I do not think this will rise to such a level.

Strange phantom wandering the dongeons of the paris opera house -- cool. Man beating his wife and then falling down a well. . . an opera ?

  3. I only read the novel last year but it's become one of my favourites.
It actually has many aspects to it that lend themselves well to opera. And let's not forget that opera today isn't as much of a cliche as some people think it to be.

  4. I think I saw Stephen King at the Met performance of Rigoletto. He applauded enthusiastically at the curtain call from his front row seat.

Is he just getting acquainted with opera? Or is it a passion of his?
    Or was it his doppelganger?
