Carrie certainly is a popular story! A couple of items concerning Carrie:
MUSICAL
Broadway world has announced that the musical Carrie will not fulfill it's announced extension. That means it will close April 8.
The directors are quoted as saying:
“MCC, the authors, and the director achieved what we all set out to do – to rescue Carrie from oblivion and to give her new life. Plans are underway to preserve this production for Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts, so it may live on in the memories of the thousands of theatergoers who saw and loved it.” (Full story HERE)Hold on! What are they talking about? "Rescue Carrie from oblivion"? All that work was simply about rescuing the old musical? This was to save face? Surely not! It seems like they're closing up shop and saying, "Well, we did better than last time. Yeah. . . YEAH! In fact, we saved the previous musical. And, come to think of it, that's what we intended to do all along."
REMAKE:
Now. . . on to the Carrie remake. Claude Brodesser-Akner posted an article at Vulture.com titled: "We hear the top candidates for the Carrie remake are. . ."
- Chloë Moretz (15) and Haley Bennett (24). Now hold on. . . so one of these ladies is 15, and the other is 24. Meaning they'll be at least 16 and 25 when filming starts. Can you imagine a 25 year old Carrie?
- For the part of Carrie's crazy mama, Julianne Moore is being considered.
- The film will be directed by Kimberly Peirce.
So why make a remake of an already great film? Got me! I dunno. Why not remake Salem's Lot or Fire-Starter. Dread Central offers this explanation:
Uncle Creepy over at Dread Central offers this explanation: “The script for this latest reboot has been written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, whose rewrite work helped save Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark on Broadway. Aguirre-Sacasa set out to write a version of Carrie that is more faithful to the King book and more grounded than the Brian De Palma-directed original film.”
I'm not a fan of DePalma's movie, so I'm happy to see a new adaptation. Maybe it will do a better job with the novel; Aguirre-Sacasa should theoretically be good for that.
ReplyDeleteCan I imagine a 25-year-old Carrie? Well, Sissy Spacek was 27 when the original movie came out, so ... yeah, I ca imagine it.
I'm hoping Chloe Moretz gets the job. She's a great actress.
There are many who are disappointed to hear that 'Carrie' will be closing off-broadway sooner than expected but I think most are hoping that, now that it has been re-worked to the authors' satisfaction, that future productions will be on the cards unlike when the first incarnation shuttered and all requests for the performance rights were turned down.
ReplyDeleteIn other words, there are people who want the show to continue to have a life beyonf the original production and the MCC production is, hopefully, just the first. It does, after all, have a lot of good things going for it.
That's a good insight, Sherman. I think you are right. I was feeling. . . silly. . . when I wrote the post.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the idea of a remake of Carrie, the original by Brian de Palma is a very good film for me as well as the tv remake of 2002, at least they're not casting Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton for the role...
ReplyDeleteFrancisco, if you like the 2002 version, why would you be opposed to the idea of another remake? If a remake worked for you once, why couldn't another remake work even better?

Personally, I think that both Foster and Moore -- the two Clarice Starlings -- are wrong for the role. I'd go after Melissa Leo.
