The Shining's Deleted Ending Script

theoverlookhotel.com has posted the screenplay for the deleted original ending of The Shining. When the Shining was originally released, there was a hospital scene between the first shot of Jack frozen and the closing shot of the framed photo, bearing the  date July 4, 1921.

The website notes,
Kubrick decided to remove the scene very shortly after the U.S. opening, dispatching assistants to excise the scene from the dozens of prints showing in Los Angeles and New York City. All known copies of the scene were reportedly destroyed, although it is rumored that one surviving copy may exist.
The website also cites Kubrick’s co-screenwriter, Diane Johnson, saying that Kubrick felt it was important the audience know that Wendy and Danny were okay.  "He had a soft spot for Wendy and Danny and thought that, at the end of a horror film, the audience should be reassured that everything was back to normal."

Normal indeed.  Unfortunately, Stephen King also has a soft spot for Danny -- and it doesn't just end in a hospital!

  1. I'd love to see that scene, but I'm glad Kubrick took it out. The movie's ending is perfect as-is.

  2. I think the hospital they are in his a symbol of the hospital the astronaughts were checked out in after the moon landing.

    1. No, no, no -- clearly it represents the hospital that Native Americans needed to go to after the white man slaughtered them.

    2. You're both wrong! The hospital, with myriad staff and executives, are clear indicator to the REAL truth!

The moon landing was faked as a multi-part, intricate publicity stunt all concocted by a miniscule rock band from England, all so they could promote their breakout LP. That band and record was, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, which they were using to reveal their own secret message.

The band-mates fathers were the REAL composers of Wizard of Oz but were stiffed on the bill by MGM! The Floyd clearly make their case by timing the beat of their record in synch the the Oz movie! (rimshot)
