One of the most interesting aspects of the story involves David's cutting off the giants head. He told Goliath up front that's what he was going to do, but he didn't even show up with a sword. He knew from the get go that he would have to get his hands on Goliath's sword and decapitate him. It's also interesting that David then took Goliath's head and posted it outside Jerusalem. A warning to his enemies -- "I'll be back."
