ROLAND... alas

.
We have official word as to who will play Roland in the film and television series The Dark Tower.
.
Stephenking.com has posted: "Mike Fleming of Deadline Hollywood is reporting that oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem will play Roland Deschain in the upcoming Dark Tower films and television series."
.
I wonder if Bardem knows he'll have his fingers bit off somewhere around movie #2.
.
Mike Flemming at deadline.com writes, "I'm told that Bardem has officially been offered the lead role by director Ron Howard and Universal Pictures. While formal negotiations haven't yet begun, there's a high level of enthusiasm internally that they've got their cowboy. Akiva Goldsman has scripted the first movie, and will write the TV component as well. Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer is producing with Goldsman and the author. Universal is financing and distributing the films, and NBC Universal Television Entertainment is backing the TV component, which will either be a limited run series or a miniseries."

  2. "Alas"...?

Bardem is perfect casting, in my opinion. Not an American, but there's no reason Roland should have to be played by an American.

Take a look at his work in "No Country For Old Men," in which he dominates -- physically, psychologically, and otherwise -- every scene he is in. His portrayal of his character in that movie is so persuasive that it was compared to Schwarzenegger's as the Terminator in terms of being an unstoppable killing machine. And if you recall your "Drawing of the Three," specifically page 348, that comparison becomes even tastier...

THAT's what you need for the role of Roland Deschain. Mortensen would have been good from an acting standpoint, but he can't compare with Bardem. As for Bale, same deal, although I'd love to see him get cast as Henry. (In "The Fighter," that may as well be who he's playing.)

If it ends up actually coming to pass, this is positively inspired casting, and tips me over the edge from trepidatious to excited in terms of my anticipation for the movies.

    "Alas. . ."
as in: Finally. I was getting tired of all the speculations and some pretty crazy rumors. Alas, the fans have some final word on who Roland will be.

  4. Lol, I'm so glad this didn't pan out. Bardem's just too damn sexy to play Roland. That, and I don't think Roland is Latino. I don't mind Roland having an accent, but he's blue-eyed and comes from an Arthurian line. He shouldn't look Mediterranean. Not that I'm thrilled about other choices that have been bandied about, either.
