CBS Goes Under The Dome

Deadline reports that CBS will go Under The Dome next Summer:
13-episode straight-to-series order to Steven Spielberg and Stephen King‘s Under The Dome, a drama based on King’s bestselling 2009 novel, which will be produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Television.
13 episodes certainly gives the series some room to breath!  That's good, since the book is full of complex  characters and a twisting plot.

Let's see. . . 13 episodes. . . Stephen ing. . . Stephen Spielberg .  . . what's not  to be excited about?!

There is a lot of cool information about how the deal went down at deadline.com.

  1. My opinion of this news is one of mixed cautious optimism.

Dome is the black sheep of the King cannon for me.

Characters that could have been good yet go undeveloped, and intricate plot that twists itself in knots before running out of steam etc.

Rather than go on about that, I'll list the one thing that gives me hope.

The article says: "Fans of the novel shouldn’t expect an exact retelling of the same story. Last we heard, writer Brian K. Vaughan’s (Lost) script for Dome was wisely using the novel’s setup as a launch pad for its own TV-format-friendly version of the story and might even lay the groundwork for a different outcome than the novel’s ending. Also, the CBS version is definitely a series, not a mini-series, with a finale episode that will leave the story open for more seasons."

There's a least the possibility of a silver lining.

It would have been nice to here the apartment building version of that story though, that one sounded like it had lots of potential.

  2. The creator/writer of Y: The Last Man is really something to hold onto here. The comic had one of the best endings of anything ever.
On the other hand the characters are so generic in the story that it will be hard not to add to them to make them interesting.
Don't get me wrong I like the story and if it weren't for Raul Esperaza I would probably have liked it more but it truly read as a screenplay.
I am disappointed it's going from cable to commercial-land but at least Disney/ABC(Disney adult) isn't making it.

    1. The only thing of Vaughan's I've read is "Saga," which is a current comic series. It's pretty great, though; his involvement makes me VERY interested.

    1. Don't be surprised if I actually do disappear at some point soon. I'm having major car troubles, and if that ends up the way I suspect it's going to end up, I may be so pinched that the internet has to go away for a year or so.

If so, I'll live. My life is still ridiculously easy compared to the way untold millions of people in the world have to live theirs, so if the worst I can gripe about ends up being a lack of internet, then I'll still count myself quite blessed.

  4. I don't know Saga, I will look into it.
    I heartily recommend Y.
    Good luck with your car.

  5. I enjoyed Under the Dome quite a lot (kinda didn't enjoy carting the monstrosity to work everyday though...) so I'm definitely for seeing some kind of adaptation. Seems a bit like they're trying to churn out the newer SK books too fast though. I just hope they've taken their time with this one to make it not be a Mick Garris-type shitfest, because with the crazy characters and situations in this story, that's most certainly a possibility.

    1. I agree wholeheartedly with the anti-Garris content of this comment.

I'll say this: there are a ton of King projects in the pipeline, and the vast majority of them seem to be at least trying to take the high road rather than the low. They haven't always even done as much as try.
