Stephen King Cameos

This is a fantastic colladge by Dan Garcia of Stephen King cameos.

Dan writes, "I love how Stephen King is like Hitchcock, in that he frequently has cameos in his movies! This is not all of them, but what role of his is your favorite?"

Merry Christmas.  Marie Lawton posted this at Stephen King constant reader fan club and gave me permission to post it here.  I LOVE IT!

King Never Cashed His Shawshank Check

The Wall Street Journal posted a series of behind the scenes pictures from The Shawshank Redemption.  One caption read:
Mr. King never cashed the $5,000 check Mr. Darabont sent him for the right to turn his story into a movie. Years after 'Shawshank' came out, the author got the check framed and mailed it back to the director with a note inscribed: 'In case you ever need bail money. Love, Steve.'
Check all the pictures out at online.wsj.com

In another article, WSJ points out that The Shawshank Redemption continues to make money.  Though the film did poorly at the box office, it caught on later.

In the days when videocassettes mattered, "Shawshank" was the top rental of 1995. On television, as cable grew, it has consistently been among the most-aired movies.
In a shifting Hollywood landscape, film libraries increasingly are the lifeblood of studios. "Shawshank's" enduring appeal on television has made it more important than ever—a reliable annuity to help smooth the inevitable bumps in a hit-or-miss box-office business. When studios sell a package of films—many of them stinkers—a "Shawshank" acts as a much-needed locomotive to drag the others behind it.  (online.wsj.com/news)
How strong is the film?  WSJ notes that though Warner Brothers wouldn't say how much they made off the film, that it was "one of 6,000 feature films in a library that last year helped generate $1.5 billion in licensing fees from television, plus an additional $2.2 billion from home video and electronic delivery."

Stephen King vs The Walking Dead

Check out this 2012 article by author James A. West on Stephen King vs. The Walking Dead. (HERE)

West writes,
Lately, I have been re-reading some of my favorites by Stephen King and immersing myself in the zombie apocalypse hit, The Walking Dead. Somehow the two got jumbled together in my mind, and I began to wonder what if, which culminated in the idea of Stephen King moving through the zombie-infested wasteland of the The Walking Dead. What follows are three of dozens of what if scenes.

Virginia Beach is celebrating the success of their native son, Josh Boone, who was recently tapped to direct the Stand.  hamptonroads.com noted,
Several Hollywood news outlets - including Variety - have reported that Boone has or will be hired to direct the film version of King's 1978 post-apocalyptic novel "The Stand."
It's a coup for a young director, visualizing the work of this generation's greatest horror scribe, but not a total surprise. Boone and King have a connection; the author played himself in Boone's feature debut "Stuck in Love.

CELL filming

Dread Central posted pictures today from the filming of CELL.  Where did they get the pictures?  Via my favorite King website,  Lilja's Library

The Dread Central article notes,
Paranormal Activity 2's Tod “Kip” Williams is directing; John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson star in the film, which recently began shooting in Atlanta. Producers are Richard Saperstein, Michael Benaroya, Brian Witten, and Shara Kay. The screenplay was written by Stephen King with revisions by Adam Alleca.
Fuhrman plays a teenage neighbor of Cusack’s character who joins him and Jackson on their journey to safety after a mysterious pulse spreads like a virus through the human population. Keach will play the headmaster of a prep school where the survivors stop along their way.

Stephen King's Twisted Grandfather

Michael Connelly produced an interesting book a few years ago titled, In The Shadow OF The Master.  It was a collection of Poe’s stories with introductions from famous authors.  King provided an introduction to The Tell Tale Heart, and noted that crime writers such as John D. MacDonaldand and Thomas Harris are what he calls “the children of Poe.”

What about Stephen King?  Is he a child of Poe?  Not quite.  King has said that he has been more inspired by other writers; but that writers he loved to read had been influenced by Poe.  Writers like Robert Block, H..P. Lovecraft and Raybradbury are all authors who fell under Poe’s spell and who in turn influenced Stephen King. These are writers King loves, so, King has suggested that Poe is more like his twisted grandfather.

This does solve the mystery of what the dome is.  It does not explain how  it goes down under the ground.

King Halloween Photo Taken In April

Check out dishmag.com's article, "Behind the lens, Stephen King," in which Raeanne Rubenstein discusses a 1985 visit to photograph Stephen King and family.

He took the picture of the King family on Halloween (above).  But guess what. . . it wasn't Halloween!  It was more like April. Rubenstein explains:
One of the greatest moments of that visit though, was when either I (I’d like to take the credit) or Stephen (I cannot remember) came up with the idea of dressing the whole family up in scary costumes. And we did! You might think it was October, Halloween, but the backs of the contact sheets say differently. It was actually April when we did this.
As you can see, Stephen was dapper as werewolf, Joe Hill as the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Tabitha pretty as a picture while walking dead, Naomi as a gorilla, and little Owen Phillip very cute, as a blood-sucking vampire with great big teeth. Now, what fun was that!
Near the end of the article, he note, "In case you’ve been thinking all these years that Stephen King might be a stuffy, intellectual, literary dude, take it from me, he is not. I took lots of pictures of him bowling with his wife, dancing into the wee hours, playing with his children, and other fun and heartwarming scenes. I promise you that though his imagination might be warped, himself King seemed like a pretty regular guy."
