The Blood-shed Weighs In On: YCKSK
Check out theblood-shed.com review of You Can't Kill Stephen King.
The review is hard to read because -- are you ready? -- there are no paragraph breaks at all. It's one big block of text. BAM! It's like people who email me (usually women) who don't have any breaks in their thoughts.
That aside, the review is worth reading.
Here are some highlights:
- The film is B beyond dispute but it has production polish.
- The horror component isn’t compromised by the humor, a significant risk when mixing and matching fright with funny.
- The first kill is both classic and creative. -- its hash of humor and horror is well-balanced and effective.
- Even without the attention-snagging title there’s enough panache to make this more than mediocre.
- It’s not the Lawrence of Arabia of scary movies but it’s a good time nevertheless.
- All the best parts of a corpse-counter.
- If you’re paying attention you can hear the brooding opening music of Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of The Shining show up briefly in this film’s score. The movie throws bloody obvious fanboy gags at the viewer with one hand while with the other hand deftly slipping in less forward references for the initiated.

You Can't Kill Stephen King 2014 U.S. RELEASE
Monore Mann of You Can't Kill Stephen King, posted this today:
After being released in over 15 international territories and being called in Japan "The best B-movie I have ever seen!", I'm stoked to report that "You Can't Kill Stephen King" is in final negotiations for a United States distribution deal for 2014. Yay!
Bev Vincent Hones In On YOU CAN'T KILL STEPHEN KING
Have you seen "You Can't Kill Stephen King" yet? Yeah -- me either. It seems the entire planet will get a peek before we lowly Americans. To help those of us who just can't seem to get a copy, Bev Vincent has posted a great review at Fearnet.
My favorite quotes:
- I was pleasantly surprised. A Return to Salem’s Lot is a bad film. Creepshow 3 is a terrible film. You Can’t Kill Stephen King is fun.
- The movie is littered with other King references, including: a disturbingly creepy clown (some things can never be un-seen); a boat named Christine; characters named Pangborn, Verrill, Dodd and Bachman; a host of quoted dialog from and references to Kubrick’s The Shining (Ronnie is reading the novel); and a tattoo in the shape of the Crimson King’s all-seeing eye.
- You Can’t Kill Stephen King has a wry sense of humor and it does an especially good job of building up false tension by relying on horror movie expectations.

YOU CAN’T KILL STEPHEN KING (2012)
Dir. Ronnie Khalil, Monroe Mann, Jorge Valdes-Iga 92 mins
Anchor Bay
UK Release: 14th October 2013
You Can’t Kill Stephen King! Even the most hardened cynical horror nerds amongst us will give a wry smile at that title. Despite the legendary author not making an appearance, it’s still a perverted humorous ode to the master from Maine.
Our guides are Lamont (Justin Brown), Ronnie (co-director Ronnie Khalil), Nicole (Kayle Blogna), Hilary (Crystal Arnette), Lori (Kate Costello) and Monroe (co-director Monroe Mann). Their mission quite simply is to hunt down the home of one Stephen King, but alas such a simple idea is rarely as easy as it looks. On stopping off at a diner on the way into town, they soon discover that visitors are frowned upon in this small community, and the diner owner (who acts very much like Annie Wilkes) makes no secret of that fact.
They’re told that Stephen King no longer lives in the town, but thinking that this may be a ruse just to keep them moving along, they decide to hang around as they have accommodation booked. First up though, they decide a boat trip is in order as rumour has it the King residence is viewable from the lake (they take a boat called Christine), whilst Lamont drives off in search of gas reminding us he’s “the only black guy in Maine”.
Later that day the group check in to their abode but with Lamont not back they have no choice but to go and look for him. The creepy boat trip guy Verrill (yes, that’s the character King played in Creepshow) points them to the gas station a quarter of a mile north, but when they arrive the sight of blue flashing lights spell disaster. With Lamont dead, it’s not long before others follow the same fate – but curiously they’re all being murdered in a similar fashion to characters from Stephen King novels.
With two characters sharing the surname Bachman, endless references to Misery, The Stand, It and Night Shift as well as a dream sequence that’s an absolute hoot, You Can’t Kill Stephen King makes for fun viewing indeed. With all the King-isms in it though, would that make it a drag for the un-King-nitiated? The answer to that would likely be yes. Critically speaking too, I think it’d be easy to throw some negatives in, and perhaps they would be justified, but sometimes a film simply has to be judged on how much fun you had watching it.
For me as a King obsessive it was a blast with a really funny script, ingenious plot and some fine gore. Sure, many of the King references seem shoehorned in, but many are also very subtle and quite obscure. Coincidentally the filmmakers encountered Stephen while shooting the movie and offered him a cameo. He declined sadly, which is a shame as it might have made this breezy and clever comedy-horror just perfect.

CONGRATULATIONS MONORE MANN!
Big news for Monroe Mann and the cast/crew of You Can’t Kill Stephen King: The horror film won the People's Choice award for feature film at the second annual Lewiston Auburn Film Festival.
Kathryn Skelton, staff writer at Lewiston-Auburn Sun Journal notes that "You Can't Kill Stephen King" drew the largest crowd of the day. The movie was filmed in 19 days around Western Maine. That’s exciting, because King has often encouraged film makers to make his movies in Maine.
Skelton writes:
Mann and Ronnie Khalil took the stage for an audience Q&A after the screening. Khalil and Jorge Valdes-Iga directed with Mann.
Mann, an actor, and Khalil, a stand-up comedian, wrote the screenplay on a lark, during a rainy weekend at Mann's family camp five years ago. The pair also co-starred and produced.
In real life, "I'm creepy but not that creepy," Khalil said.
Mann saw Stephen King twice during filming. The famous author declined a cameo in the movie. The directors are talking now to sales agents and fielding distribution offers. The full article is HERE.

Stephen King Immortalized in New Campy Horror Film, “You Can’t Kill Stephen King”
April 11, 2012 10:03 AM Eastern Daylight Time
LEWISTON, Maine--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Stephen King has long been a staple in the horror genre, penning such box office hits as The Shining, Carrie, Apt Pupil, and many more. But on Saturday, a new film premieres that immortalizes Mr. King, making him not only the subject of the film but possibly one of its killers.
“You Can’t Kill Stephen King” is a campy horror parody about a group of friends that vacation near a lake where Mr. King lives, and begin to get killed off one at a time in ways from his books. The friends must piece together a string of clues to stop the copy-cat killer, or risk falling victim themselves.
Judging by the trailer on YouTube, which is both funny and self-deprecating, the film doesn’t take itself too seriously and labels itself as “a horror film that breaks all the rules by not breaking a single rule.”
The film is the brainchild of Monroe Mann and Ronnie Khalil, an attorney/Iraq vet and a stand-up comedian respectively, who came up with the idea during a rainy day at the very lake they shot the film.
What does Mr. King think about the film? “Well, he declined being in it,” says Khalil. “But we did get him the script very early on and he was kind enough to feature our trailer on his ‘unofficial news’ section of his website, so we’re thrilled about that.”
The premiere will take place at the Lewiston Auburn Film Festival this Saturday, April 14th, in the Mr.
King’s home state of Maine, where so many of his books took place. The film is a hot ticket item at the Festival and Mr. King was sent a personal invitation.
“Well, I’m not really sure that’s going to happen,” says Mann. “But this film is an homage to him and his films, all of which have obviously influenced us as well many of the cast and crew. If he does come, we hope he laughs and enjoys it.”

The Lewiston Auburn Film Festival will take place on April 13, 14 and 15, opening with a concert by Don McLean at the Franco-American Heritage Center in Lewiston. For ticket and film information, visit www.lafilmfestival.org.
Mann Talks YOU CAN'T KILL STEPHEN KING
Monroe Mann, the director (and I think -- author, screenwriter, producer. . .) of YOU CAN'T KILL STEPHEN KING put up some really interesting news Sunday about the movie. First, as you can guess, he is very excited about it.
Mann writes:
"The film is great!" he posts. "I am SO excited. I just watched the entire film (the film I co-wrote, co-directed, and co-starred in, "You Can't Kill Stephen King")—beginning to end, including credits. And… IT ROCKS. I was laughing hysterically every five minutes. I am SO proud of this." Rock on, man! Stephen King said in On Writing -- "You cannot hope to sweep someone elese away by the force of your writing until it has been done to you." Probably true of movie making, too.
The plot is pretty straight forward: A group of friends visit a lake where horror author Stephen King lives, and start getting killed off one at a time. Or, as Mann told Fangoria, "It’s a campy horror film about six friends who visit a lake where Stephen King lives and start to get killed off one at a time. Oh wait, did I just give away our amazing plotline?" (The Fangoria article is HERE)
Does King Know About This?
Fangoria also asked if King was aware of the movie. Ronnie Kahalil replied,
"Mr. King was kind enough to read the script and smart enough to pass on it. But yeah, he is aware and was actually around the area during some of the filming."
Monroe Mann added to that, "I ran into him twice during shooting at the local markets. This film is really a homage to his great work and how much he’s influenced our generation. Fortunately, he has always been really supportive of young filmmakers. So even though he is not involved with the project, we’re hoping he likes the finished film and finds it both fun and funny."It is also worth mentioning that Stephen King's official website has posted news about the movie (under "unoffical news) and even linked to the trailer. Cool!
Netflix?
When I asked when we normal humans (those of us who do not fly about the country and attend film festivals) will get to see the film, Mann responded:
"It will probably be available on Netflix, Amazon, etc soon. Three hours ago, I was curious why all these distributors and sales agents were showing interest. I wasn't sure if they were sincere. but now, after having watched this final cut, I realize why they are interested: THE FILM IS ACTUALLY REALLY GOOD, HA HA! And so, I am confident that we will get a distribution deal and that you will be able to watch in the comfort of your own home soon. Also, we expect to have a screening in the tri-state area soon, perhaps this summer, if you can't make the screening in April in Maine."Thanks For Serving!
Mann served in the U.S. Army (and deployed) -- a big thanks to him for serving our country.
IMDb info on this movie is HERE.
The real question is: You Can't Kill Stephen King. . . but why would you want to?
