Over all, I enjoy Wolves of the Calla most. The feeling of the novel was great. Also, the unique method by which the town made war on the robot army was fantastic. Will it work on screen? Dunno! Wolves is kind of Star Trekish to me. They beam down into this town, where a separate plot plays out for most of the novel. Once the action is complete, they beam back to the road and travel on where no man has gone before. Yes, it is tied into the series, but it's nice to have the Ka-tet stop for a while.
By far, my favorite scenes from the series come from the second book, The Drawing of The Three. The beach is great, and when Roland begins passing through the doors -- I love it!
Here's a quick list of scenes I hope to catch in the movie:
- The hand cart in the mine as Roland and Jake are chased by slow mutants. (Gunslinger)
- Eddie on the plane, passing his drugs into Roland's world. (Drawing of the 3)
- Detta Odetta. (Drawing of the 3) Someone has their work cut out for them making that hapen!
- The gangster gunfight. (Drawing of 3)
- Pulling Jake through. (Wastelands)
- Killing the Bear. (Wastelands)
- The passing through the world of The Stand. (Wizard and Glass)
- Roland with ruby slippers. (Wizard and Glass)
- The battle with the robots. (Wolves)
- Stephen King meets Roland Deschain. (Song of Susannah)
- The ascent of the Dark Tower. (Dark Tower)
- My wife wants to see Blane the Train. (Also known as the naughty version of the Disneyland monorail)
The real question remains: WHO WILL PLAY STEPHEN KING?
(1) The beginning of "The Gunslinger" (The man in black fled across the desert...)
ReplyDelete(2) The shootout in Tull.
(3) Did-a-Chick? Dum-a-chum? Dad-a-cham?
(4) Roland inhabiting Jack Mort and using him to get ammunition and medicine, then making sure that he dies.
(5) The confrontation with Mir.
(6) Anything with Oy. Oy rules.
(7) The young gunslingers facing down Jonas, Depape, and Reynolds in the bar.
(8) The thinny.
(9) The secret highways of Father Callahan.
(10) The unfound door.
(11) The shootout at the Dixie Pig.
(12) "Stephen King." Who will play him, indeed... (My first thought is William H. Macy, but since in the novel it's King circa 1977, he's need to be someone considerably younger. My suggestion: if he can act at all -- and hey, he WAS in "Creepshpw"! -- then it should be Joe Hill.)
(13) The, um, fate of Randall Flagg.
(14) The final scene.
I'm mainly curious to see how they condense the story, which is something they are unquestionably going to have to do. How do you deal with Patrick Danville, for instance? Will the comics be featured much (and if they are, I expect to see lots of Aileen, who became one of my favorite characters)?
It's a fun time to be a Dark Tower fan.
The part where Roland, Cuthbert and Alain ambush Jonas and his men on horseback in Wizard and Glass.
ReplyDeleteThe whole sequence book 3 when Gasher kidnaps Jake to the part where they're reunited in the Cradle of Lud is one of my favorites.
Roland dancing the commala.
Roland's and Sheemmie's reunion in book 7.
Eva, I almost put Roland dancing the commala on my list, too! Unfortunately, I'm betting the vast majority of that novel gets excised, and there won't be any such thing as a commala as far as the movies are concerned.
ReplyDeleteThe more I think about it, though, the more possible it seems that if the first movie is a big hit (fingers crossed!), Universal might put pressure on Howard and Goldsman to make more than three movies. After all, why cut down a cash crop before it's done producing? I guarantee you that if Universal sees enough dollars in it, they'll try and make six or seven movies rather than just three.
Let's just hope it gets to that point!
To make a successful first movie, I think the script will need to move pretty quickly to Drawing of the Three. King used to encourage people to read Drawing first.
