I'm not entirely sure what to make out of this excerpt. On the one hand, it's entertaining, and seemingly well-written, and just plain SOUNDS like Stephen King.
On the other hand, the notion of elderly vampires travelling the land in RVs, stopping at Shoney's and at rest stops and wearing tacky senior-citizen apparel ... that's an idea that has a huge amount of potential to be ridiculous. As always, I trust S.K., but ... man, I dunno, this seems a little on the dodgy side to me.
I sure would hate to see the legacy of "The Shining" tainted in any way by a vastly inferior spinoff. (I'm not going to call it a sequel, by the way -- not, at least, until it's evident that this story has something to do with "The Shining" apart from simply having Danny Torrance as a character.)
