JAM Showbiz has an interesting article on Stanley Kubrick. Bruce Kirkland writes, "Filmmaker Stanley Kubrick died suddenly of a heart attack in his sleep 12 years ago, leaving behind a legacy of just 13 feature films, two of which he had long since disowned, including Spartacus. Yet a passionate debate about all of his controversial classics rages on."
The article is very insightful. However, they have a list of 5 top scenes, and the Shining doesn't make it. Come on! They did include it in their cover picture.

Kubrick isn't for everyone, but I'm a huge fan; my favorite director are Spielberg and Hitchcock, with Kubrick right behind the two of them.
ReplyDelete"2001: A Space Odyssey" remains one of my very favorite movies, with "Dr. Strangelove" and "A Clockwork Orange" and "The Shining" not too far behind it. But really, they're all pretty great (except for "Killer's Kiss," which isn't very good at all -- and I can't speak to "Fear and Desire," which I've never seen).
I don't know why Kubrick was so down on "Spartacus." He must have had a miserable time making it or something, but it's still a pretty terrific movie.
I'd also highly recommend "The Killing," which is a damn fine crime flick with Sterling Hayden and Elisha Cook Jr., amongst others.
